Lessons focused on two methods of Deer Hide Processing. Through "hands-on" teamwork, everyone will learn the Wet Scrape method with hides provided (or bring your own). We will also prepare a hide for the Dry Scrape method—especially good for those with limited time.

• Instructions will be given on tanning, softening, and preserving pelts from various animals.
• You will not be able to complete a full project during the 1-day workshop, but you will get the hands-on experience needed to go home and do it yourself!
• Boy Scouts: This 1-day class is great for earning the Leatherwork Merit Badge (Scout & group rate discounts apply).

We will review the total process of turning the skin of an animal into something you can wear, from skinning to smoking!

• We will stretch and frame a hide for the Dry Scrape Method.
• Brain Tanning will set in overnight.
• Sunday will be the final step in softening and waterproofing the hides by smoking.
• Ideas for how to make articles of clothing from your finished product will be discussed.

In this 2-day workshop option, you will learn what can be made out of rawhide, and you will go home with a beautiful deerskin Native American hoop drum that you make yourself!

Overnight: You are welcome to camp over Saturday night to continue with day two!



Meals: Please bring your own food to cook over the campfire.

Capacity: Space is strictly limited to 10 participants because we only have so many tools!



Ages: Parent/Child teams will be accommodated. A 12-year-old could complete the project with desire and determination. It is not an easy task but a very rewarding one.
